Micrsoft Access 97 Message: "Database" needs to be repaired

I need someone to share light on a recurring issue with a
multiuser, server based database which continues to
require repair. There are multiple feeds into this Access
97 database, and update queries, etc. being run daily.
There are also multiple simultaneous users. Why does the
database "shutdown" - disallowing usage until it
is "repaired?"
