I used microsoft's regmaid to clean my registry, unfortunately I deleted
everything it found and this program doesn't create backups. I had to
reinstall win xp because I could not use the restore option from xp anymore
after I "cleaned" the registry.

Since I got a trible boot system I was able to safe may files to another OS
before I reformated and reinstalled.

So be carefull with this program.

So, before running it, you didn't run a full backup? You didn't make a
ghost copy before running a completely unknown REGCLEANER? How come you
didn't try it on a test machine?

Why would you run something like that, something that could trash your
entire machine, without testing it or without getting feedback first?

Regmaid > About box states that it's tested in Windows 95 and NT. This should not be used in any other Operating Systems except 95/NT. Regmaid does not expand the REG_EXPAND_SZ variables in the registry and takes the given value literally. Thus, it lists the following as an invalid key.

For example:
---
%systemroot%\system32\dmview.ocx
{AEB84C80-95DC-11D0-B7FC-B61140119C4A}
---

Whereas the file dmview.ocx exists (in C:\Windows\System32 folder).

Well,
I was thinking about a reinstall anyways since I ran xp already for 1 year
and tested all kind of software....you know how much stuff is left over when
you uninstall some programs. I wanted to see if I can speed up my
machine...looks like my configuration before wasn't too bad since I don't see
much difference after the fresh install....also, I just created a new xp sp2
CD...[took my original xp CD and included the new sp2 update to it, for info
on how to do it..check google] to safe time with the updates. It worked like
a charme!

As for the future...I'm gonna ignore all these reg cleaner programs [except:
jv16]
thanks for the comments

That's a better idea. Or, use then with caution.

Complete registry backup:

Use System Restore to Undo Changes if Problems Occur:
