I have been getting Microsoft Windows Critical Update pop -ups for
the past 2 weeks now. It may be my imagination, but around the time I
click to check for the update I get mail returns (so-big) in my box.
Could this be the cause?

Are they the actual popups associated with the windows automatic update
service or something disguising itself as such? Are you going to the
windows update site afterwards to see if there are critical updates
available for your machine and if so are you installing them so that you
should no longer get the popups until the next updates are available? MS is
now trying to release their patches on a weekly schedule so for the most you
should only be getting these popups on a weekly basis if you do infact use
this feature properly and install the patches promptly.

Otherwise are you using a dial up or ppoe account and use a utility that
automatically checks for new mail when you go online? If so maybe it is just
a "coincidence" that the auto update features phones home and the maillbox
utility check your pop server as soon as a connection to the internet is
recognized?
