We just bought a new computer through ShopNBC
with XP home and all the wonderful things it can do.

The one problem we have is that there is not a
Microsoft Works program. In the accessories there is
"notepad" and Wordpad but at this point they seem
very hard to use. Can I get Microsoft Works added
to the computer.

The computer is a V2Premier

Yes even Office but at full retail price. You are meant to purchase
Works/Works Suite/Office when you buy the computer - that way it is cheaper.

I urge you to download and try out Open Office. It will give you
more than the basic Works program, and it is free. Check it out at:

And for god's sake, make sure you are running a firewall if you
have Windows XP set at its default (as I suspect you do). Turn on
the firewall that is packaged with XP, or better yet, download
ZoneAlarm and install it.

You should double check the software that came with your computer as the ones I saw advertised on shopnbc all came with microsoft works and microsoft money.
If you don't have the cd, double check your receipt or the product description online and call customer service.

To clarify...those are trial versions...or last years version in the case of
money. Some machines will have an OEM version of Works, but no machine,
especially budget machines, will come with the full version of Office or
Word.

Notepad is just a very basic text editor that handles .txt files. No
spell checking, margins, whatever. Wordpad is one step above Notepad,
but still very lacking.

Like the other guy said, download "Open Office", a freeware office
type package. I don't understand why you didn't get Works & Money
with the XP installed computer. If it wasn't a mistake & they aren't
on your recovery CD that came with your computer, then I'm guessing
the manufacturer must have to pay a little more for each OEM version
of XP they install on their computers (not sure how it works), and
they are so god darned cheap-assed they opted not to include it in
their bundle.

Well, I wouldn't exactly call that a problem. There are thousands
of other programs it doesn't come with either; I wouldn't call
those problems.

In general, computers often come with an operating system, but
not necessarily with any significant application software. *Some*
vendors bundle software packages with the computers they sell,
but others don't. And the ones who do don't all bundle the same
software packwages. It's far from true that all computers come
with Works.

Notepad is a text editor, and doesn't come close to being a real
word processor. WordPad is only slightly more capable. Neither is
meant to do what you probably want.

Sure. You can buy and install Works, Microsoft Office, Corel
Office, StarOffice, OpenOffice, and any of several other choices.
By and large, Microsoft Works is probably the least capable of
these, but it has the advantage of being inexpensive and its
capabilities may be sufficient for your needs.

Applications like that are not part of Windows; they have to be
purchased separately. They *may* be bundled in on some machines, but
evidently not with yours. You will need to buy a copy; either of
Microsoft Works or I suggest considering at rather higher price, "Works
Suite", which includes Microsoft Word as its word processor
