Windows XP has a character map in START/ALL Programs/System
Tools. All characters and symbols can be pasted from their
and they have a alt key/ number which you can use also.

Hold the Alt key down and type 0247 on the numeric keypad if you are in any
of the normal text fonts supplied with Windows (TNR or Arial)

As was posted by someone else, you may also start Character Map and use the
Copy/Paste function to place any character in any font into a Word document.

I aways have a shortcut to Character Map on my desktop. Right click
desktop. Click New/shortcut. Type CHARMAP.EXE in the first box then click
next. Type Character Map in the second window. Click Finish. It will
preassign a key type icon to the shortcut.

Double click on the shortcut. A window opens which shows any symbols, text
etc that is contained in the font name at the top of the window.
You can change to any font by using the dropdown scroll box.
To select a symbol, such as the division sign, click on it and then click
Select and then Copy. Go to your application and place your cursor where
you want to past the symbol and hold Ctrl key down as you tap the V key.
The symbol will be placed in that location in the font that was previously
selected.

You may have to change back to your original font immediately after
inserting a different font's symbol. To do that in Word, click on the font
list and select the original font and start typing.
