I have ALWAYS used microsoft word, and i just purchased a new computer, which
is a Dell with Windows Vista, and come to find out it has Microsoft Works on
it?? It seems similar, but i can't open any files that are word format!! help!

Microsoft Works and Word are two different products. The confusion occurs
because the Works Suite (which you are unlikely to have unless you purchased
it as an option) includes a copy of Word 2002. If you have an installed copy
of Word and you are unable to open old Word documents then see Jay
Freedman's contribution to the thread 'Unable to open file created in an
earlier version' from yesterday.

To add to what Graham says, no version of Windows automatically comes with
any version of Word, nor does any computer. When you buy a computer, it is
up to you to ascertain (or specify) what applications are installed. Unless
you pay extra for Office, Works Suite, or Word, you will not get Word. Some
computers come with Works, some with Corel Office Suite, some with no word
processing software beyond WordPad, but if you have purchased wisely, you
will not be surprised by what you get.
