I am a student and I believe that Word should contain a stopwatch in a
toolbar for when rehearsing speeches. I am using Microsoft Office 2003
Professional and am pleased with its inerface.

The program designed for speeches/presentations is PowerPoint and it
has a Slide Show\Rehearse Timing command. Even if you don't have a
presentation you may be able to use this feature to time your speech.

Otherwise, open your Date and Time Properties and jot down the
specific time (h:m:s) you started your speech. Then when you're done
with your speech, note the time you finished and calculate the
difference between the two.
