Microsoft Windows Update - Fails!

First of all no known virus present (checked with norton
and the latest data file - today 18-08-03!!). The usual
process allow the microsoft site to scan your PC to see
what updates are required and it goes through the process
of installing only to return an error message telling you
that it failed. Nothing else appears to be wrong. I am
sitting behind two firewalls none of the configurations
have been changed since the update was last used - and it
worked!!

Has anyone any clues where to start with this problem?
 
If you have not fixed this yet I found a solution that works in the
microsoft.public.windowsupdate news group.
