Since installing SP2 I have been having a problem seeing all of my computers
in my workgroup. After all of the computers are rebooted I see them all,
then one by one they disappear, only the 98SE machines remain. I can assess
the computers because they are mapped, however my backup runs from Microsoft
windows network and not the mapped drive. Can anyone tell my what is going
on here and why they keep disappearing?

Thanks

Candie,

Sounds like a browser (not IE) subsystem issue, compounded by Windows Firewall
(SP2 Internet Connection Firewall) settings.

Check your WF settings on each SP2 computer, under Exceptions, make sure that
File and Printer Sharing is checked.

If that all checks out, then let's diagnose the browser subsystem in your LAN.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), needs no install, and runs from the command
prompt. Just drop it onto each of the computers, and run it.

Please provide browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:

Candie,

Two interesting things revealed by browstat:
1) "There are 6 servers" yet you only provide browstat for 3.
2) Only 1 backup server displayed for each. There should be 2 backup servers
(one will be the master browser).

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on each computer?
Do you have shares setup on each?

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer?

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer (excepting the Win98
systems). Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the
Computer Browser service shows with Status = Started, on the WinXP systems.

Cheers,
Chuck

I only ran browstat on thw XP machines I did not know you
wanted it run on the 98 machiens as well, sorry,

Yes Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer
Sharing are running on all machines.

They are set to shared ( I can assess using a mapped drive)

I will need to check on the other two items. It will be a
few days. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Candie,

The important thing here is to get a second computer acting as a browser. If
you get the browser service, and NetBIOS Over TCP/IP, running on all WinXP
computers, that should be sufficient.

Once you do that, browstat on the WinXP computers should show a backup browser,
and your visibility problems should stabilise.

You need to be consistent here. The election of the master browser will
designate the WinXP computer that has been on the longest as the master browser.
The master browser therefore needs to be the most stable, and consistently
available, computer on your LAN.

If Jfinn is the proper choice for this role, then you simply need another WinXP
computer to act as the backup browser. If Jfinn is NOT the appropriate choice,
then you will need to turn all WinXP computers off, then bring the preferred
master browser up first.

If the above instructions do not lead you to having a second browser, then we
need to do some additional diagnoses.

Cheers,
Chuck
