What are the url's? If you tell us, we can check them out for you.
Without any more information, it is hard to be specific. I would
suggest you run through these troubleshooting steps first:

1) Scan in Safe Mode with current version (not earlier than 2003)
antivirus using updated definitions;

2) remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy
(www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com). These
programs are free, so use them both since they complement each other.
There is a new version of CWShredder from
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html. I would
not install the other Intermute programs, however. Alternately, there
are CoolWebSearch malware removal steps at
http://www.silentrunners.org/sr_cwsremoval.html. A combination of
HijackThis and About:Buster (http://www.majorgeeks.com) works well in
removing homepage hijackers. Always read the instructions before
running a spyware removal tool. Be sure to update these programs before
running, and it is a good idea to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode.
Make sure you are able to see all hidden files and extensions (View tab
in Folder Options);

3) If you are running Windows ME or XP, you should disable/enable System
Restore because malware will be in the Restore Points. With ME, you
must disable System Restore completely. With XP, you can delete all but
the most recent (presumably clean) System Restore point from the More
Options section of Disk Cleanup (Run>cleanmgr).

4) make sure you've visited Windows Update and applied all security
patches. Do not install driver updates from Windows Update;

5) run a firewall.

When you are sure your computer is 100% spyware and virus-free, if the
problem persists, then please post back to this thread. Let us know a)
what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't;
b) what the results of the above troubleshooting were; c) and some of
the urls you with which you are having trouble.

Hi
Thanks for your help. The website I first noticed it on was: www.kvi.com. I
have a up to date firewall (zone alarm) and an up to date antivirus
(symantec), SP2 and the latest MS updates. I run the latest versions of up to
date Spybot and Ad aware 6 and both show a clean system. I also get an
address error message when I open up my Asus Prob untility when I first use
it. I have done a fair amount of resarch on the subject of "visual c ++
runtime library" but I'm still not sure what it is or how to elimenate it or
why I have it on my system. This has taken place very slowly over about a
weeks time. I just don't understand any part of this. Thanks

Hi, firewire. Well, your excellent security measures certainly have
ruled out the malware angle. I went to the KVI site and didn't have any
trouble, but I'm using Mozilla on SuSE 9.1. I looked at the page source
and didn't see anything strange, but I'm not a web coder so you can't
rely on my assessment of "strange" 100% regarding html. There are
references to Javascript, and you might have security settings that are
preventing the script from running.

The thing that puzzles me and makes me think the Javascript isn't the
issue is that you say this has happened very slowly and gradually.
Usually when software breaks, it breaks right away after a change in
the system, not gradually over time.

Since I'm not an expert on the ins-and-outs of IE, I'm going to suggest
3 things:

1. Download and install an alternate browser like Mozilla or Firefox.
See if the problem continues going to the same page with that.
Obviously, if you don't have any problems then you know the issue is
with IE.

2. If you get the same problem with another browser, maybe your network
card is failing or you have a physical problem with the hardware used
to connect to the Internet (cable/dsl modem, router, etc.). I think
this is "reaching" on my part, but I'm just throwing out ideas here.

3. Post your excellently worded question in one of the MS newsgroups
specializing in Internet Explorer. Here's a link to a list of all the
MS newsgroups:

http://aumha.org/nntp.htm

I'm so sorry I don't have a definitive answer for you.

Best of luck,

You mean how do you use Outlook as a newsreader? Outlook doesn't have a
newsreader, but instead calls Outlook Express. Since I don't use
Outlook, I'm not sure how you start it, but undoubtedly the Help file
will tell you. Here are my links about using OE as a newsreader:

Other Windows newsreaders that people like are Forte's Agent (there is a

use and loved best) has been updated. Here are links to all of those

Hello Malke
Just a follow up note to let you know whats going on:
1) I was able to set up "outlook" to access the MS Newsgroups
2) Did a 'FSP" check, using the software/tool: all results negative
3) Ran a "CHKDSK" on all volumes: all results negative
4) Did numerous adware/malware checks all Negative

The one common thread that runs thru this dilemma is the situation where I
can not access KVI (when I select "ok" the window crashes) and the "Access
Violation" when I access Asus Probe2. Other than that I can use/ access
everything else
Thats it, what do you think?

Try downloading and installing the Firefox or Mozilla web browser and
see if you still get the problem going to kvi.com. Just for you, I
booted an XP SP2 box and opened up IE, and I'm sorry to tell you I had
no problems with www.kvi.com there. I wish I could tell you exactly
what is happening, but I'm afraid I can't. You can get to other url's
OK? Does the error message happen as soon as you connect to
www.kvi.com, or are you clicking on something on the page? I clicked a
lot of links and didn't have any problems, either. Try opening Task
Manager and have it open, watching all services and programs running,
while you try to get to www.kvi.com.

As for the Asus Probe, I Googled for "problems Asus Probe 2" and got
some interesting links that suggest other people have had problems with
that program. Here are a few:

http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread21489-1.html

The forums on AMDMB are a great place to post questions about
motherboard/hardware problems. Here's the url:

Best of luck to you, and please if you do find a solution post it.

Hello Malke
Thanks for your reply. I think I may have found a piece of the problem. Some

time ago I created an E:\ volume on my hard disk: I divided the disk into
two parts and now have a C:\ and a E:\ volume. At the same time I move "My
Documents to the E:\ volume so as to separate the OS from my personal data.
However I've noticed that under the E:\ volume there now appear several
iterations of "My Documents". I believe that this situation may be causing
the "access and address violations". Have you any opinions on what would be
the preferred method to straighten out the file system? Thanks for your
help.

Offhand, I don't. However, go to MVP Kelly Theriot's site here:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

and look under "M" and scroll down to the My Documents section. There
are three links about moving My Documents and system folders. See if
any of that helps.

I appreciate all the help you have given me. Why is it that I can't reply to
your latest reply from my outlook reader? It always comes back as
undeliverable.

As with most people who volunteer time here the email address is munged or
falsified to spoil spammers attempts to automatically harvest email
addresses from the groups.

Thank you, Ron. Yes, I'm sorry but I don't provide free email tech
support and I don't give out my real email address. I'm sure you're a
nice person, but there are many who aren't. And I get way too much spam
as it is (not meaning that it would be from you).

Hi
Recognize that I'm a rookie to the Outlook reader form of the newsgroup.
Given your explanation below, is the implication that one can not reply to
threads when using the Outlook interface? That was really my question. Thanks
PS the articles you recommended helped

You can reply, but limit the reply to the group instead of a reply to
sender. If you haven't done so yet, you can righ click on your tool bar and
choose 'customize.' Run through the available icons and make sure you have
an icon for "Reply group' as well as the "Reply sender." Generally some
people just add extra text to their email address and if you need to contact
those people, you will need to remove the offending text prior to actually
sending the reply. 1st rule of thumb though - Keep the replies in the
newsgroup - it lessens the load on the helping party and help others who may
be having the same issue as you are experiencing.

Thanks for the explanation. Another question if I may: when one uses the
Outlook express for a new reader is the data of the Newsgroups on ones hard
drive? Thanks.

Yes - with a caveat. The messages are stored on your hard drive but are
dependant on the retention by the news server they are posted to. Depending
on the retention level for the newsgroup, messages may disappear as the
hosting server clears off over-aged posts.
