Meet the Fokkers

By Paul Hales: viernes 19 noviembre 2004, 14:22
IT'S BEEN A WHILE since I wrote about Hotmail. Inbetweentimes, I note
the size of free account I'm allowed has swelled to a fat 250Mb as
opposed to the measly 2Mb I squeezed myself into back then. Which is
nice.

But what I really don't like is that stupid Messenger. It's an
annoying little Fokker which is persistent, which invades your Windows
setup and with which you can waste hours of your time wittering, if
you so choose.

And I'm told that once you stick your head over the parapet to use it,
all these other online stalkers will spot you and you'll be dragged
into multiple conversations with folk you don't really want to speak
to but who might get offended if you ignore or blacklist them.

So when I opened up Hotmail yesterday and got a message offering to
upgrade Message to six point summat I clicked Cancel. It opens up
again though, so you have to do this twice. And the "Are you sure"
thing - twice

Then today I had to go Hotmailing again but as I opened it up the
phone rang. Distracted, I missed the Cancel button and the bloody
thing installed itself before I could stop it. Then it hung my system.

Now, if I go there and open up a message, the screen hangs for an age,
or forever.

No doubt somewhere in the small print Microsoft says: "Since you're
still too much of a tightarse to pay for a nice big Hotmail Plus
account, we reserve the right to install whatever we like on your
system. I mean, it's our system really, we make it work by renting you
all the clever software anyhow. And everyone knows we're a force for
good and the world would be worse off without us. And you can trust
us. In everything we do we have our customers' best interests at
heart, etc, etc." Fokkers indeed. µ
