A small hitch has cropped up in Microsoft's beta-testing program for Vista: the software giant
has temporarily run out of product keys for testers.
The following update was posted on the password-protected Microsoft Connect website, where
Microsoft communicates with its core group of beta testers.

"9-5-06 - We are currently out of additional keys for package "5342 and Up Ultimate". We will
have more keys available for download within 72 hours. Please do NOT send mail to MCHelp or
LHBeta regarding this issue."

Microsoft has now put Our Overnight Planning System (OOPS) into operation and is urgently
generating more keys.

(Yes, we made that last bit up.)

What is sad is how information like this winds up getting leaked to the
public.

I disagree.

This is the excitement that should be there.

I feel that the tempo, verve, excitement, expectation and dynamics are
now at a different level than they were merely a few months ago and
this, in my opinion, is how it should be.

I seek reassurance that it (this new tempo and lack of moribundity)
should continue and look forward to a time when statement such as
"Microsoft is pleased to announce that the expected release date of
Product XYZ of June 200X has been brought forward by a full three
months. Commendations go to all developers, partners and participants
to whom this accelerated release date would not, repeat NOT, be possible"

That, or something along similar lines should, in my opinion, become the
mundane rather than "Server 2005 will be released in March 2009" type
announcements.

I agree with you Kristan. I also read that article, but the truth is I only
saw it at 3:30 this afternoon when I went to get a new key, at which point
the keys were available.

I think people should re-read (uhuh... right) their Non-Disclosure
Agreements (NDAs) that they agreed to when applying to the beta program and
learn that what happens internally should stay internal.

It has the potential of being sad and possibly undermine CTP initiatives
were the CTP community to be deprived of relevant and important information.

It is, in my opinion, important for MS staff, appointees and agents to
uphold the caliber, spirit and intention of community involvement if for
naught else than very good PR?
