Microsoft Photo Editor won't print

J

Jack Gillis

I have XP-SP2 installed along with Office 2003 and its Microsoft Picture
Manager. Picture Manager prints photos just fine but when I try to use
the old Microsoft Photo Editor, with which I am very comfortable, it
will not print either from the File/Print menu or the Printer icon.

I get a message saying that the Photo Editor encountered a problem and
has to end and then asking if I want to send an error report. I choose
Yes, the report is sent and Photo Editor exits.

When I try to print from the icon, I get a Save Window asking me where I
want to save the picture rather than printing it to the default printer
as usually occurs when the icon is used from other applications. The
default save format is shown an Microsoft Imaging Format (MDI.) That
seems strange to me.

This is the first time I have tried to use Photo Editor since installing
Office 2003. Is the some conflict? And what do I need to do to be able
to print from the Photo Editor?

Thank you very much.

Thank you Jim. The info in the places you pointed out doesn't seem to
address my problem. Photo Editor works fine except for the Print
function.

Have you tried reinstalling Photo Editor using your old
OFFICE CD?

I have OFFICE XP (2002) so I can't help by experimenting. I
use Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 for most of my purposes and
also IRFANVIEW.

What make and model printer and how is it connected, have
you tried reinstalling it?

Good luck.

No, I haven't and can't do that 'cuz I dont have my Office 97 CD's
anymore.

Actually I tried reinstalling all three of my printers to no avail I
never get past the 'Photo Editor has encountered a problem and must
exit' message as soon as I click on File Print. Have tried System
Restore to my earliest Restore Point again no luck. I do have a Ghosted
Image of just before I installed Office 2003. I might try it sometime
today even though I am happy using the Office 2003 Picture Manager
except I think the Photo Editor is easier to use.

Thanks again.

Sometimes we just have to move on, give IRFANVIEW a try,
it's free and is nice, has some unique features. And
Elements (version 3 is out now) is a very powerful and
reasonably priced program.

Seems the "default printer bug" has bitten again. Photo Ed picks its OWN
default printer and it seems to have picked the freshly found MODI
writer! Remove it and try again is all I can say.

Thank you.

Do you mean remove Photo Ed or remove the MODI writer? I know how to do
the former but not the latter.

Thanks again.

If it is no use to you, r-click and delete. It should be able to
reinstall from Office CD if needed.

I am having the same problem and wrote it up as below to post here:
Subject: MS photo editor won't print w/ WIN XP & Word 2003.
Q. I like to use MS photo editor for editing and printing my digital images.
My company recently provided me with a Dell D800 laptop running WIN XP Pro
and Office 2003. I can still open MS photo editor, which I copied over to the
new computer, and edit my digital images. But when I try to print I get the
following error "Microsoft Photo Editor has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." and must close Photo Editor
to continue. Does anyone know of a way to make Photo Editor work & print in
this environment, like via a registry change. I believe there was an earlier
such change to enable Photo Editor to work fully with Office 2000.
Photo Editor came with Office 97, which I still have. Perhaps I could dual
load Word 97 along with Word 2003 and choose Word 97 when I want to run Photo
Editor? I'm not sure that this would work even if I did this. The
incompatibility is maybe with WIN XP, don't know.
Any help would be appreciated.

I cant help but reply. Why should MS Windows XP Prof - at it's cost, not be
able to "simply" load a picture, edit a picture, and print a picture. Isn't
that something everyone wants to do now!!!! I cant believe how terribly
complicated it all gets - I bought the biggest and best and latest MS sells,
and I have to load external software to get something as needed as this - ?
bummer.

And the EU sued MS to prevent Media Player from being included so I
suppose we should ask if you would like some cheese to go with your whine?

Wasn't that called the European Lawyers Employment Act of 2002?
