Microsoft Photo Editor 3.0 fails to open JPEG

Recently I "upgraded" from Win98SE to WinXP-Pro. For years I've been
using Microsoft Photo Editor 3.0 as a fast and easy tool for viewing and
editing .jpg and .gif files. I like that it opens super fast and doesn't
force me to work my way through a maze of options just to halve the
resolution of an image or increase the contrast of a scanned drawing
drawn on yellow lined paper. I have Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10,
but it is overkill, too slow, and too cumbersome for most all of my
simple image processing needs.

My problem is that Microsoft Photo Editor 3.0 works fine right after
being loaded from the Office97 discs, and it seems to be compatible with
my Epson 2480 scanner software as well as images downloaded using
Firefox and Netscape.

HOWEVER, there must be an incompatibility somewhere because EVENTUALLY
IT STALLS and refuses to open .jpg files. If I "restore" my system to
an earlier date prior to the appearance of the problem, Photo Editor 3.0
regains its abilities until the unknown conflict is again encountered.

A possible suspect is SideKick98, but if so, the impact is not obvious;
I am a heavy user of SideKick98 features, and have been unable to get it
to crash Photo Editor 3.0. Among the other programs that I regularly use
are XL95, XL97, Word97, PwrPoint97, Quicken2003, FTP-Commander,
Thunderbird, Picasa and IE.

Can someone suggest a more modern, but simple and modestly priced,
program that offers basic image editing capabilities without the
complication of image file management features?

Wow! Mary,

It will take some time to understand
all the options in Paint.NET but it's
great. I especially like the Undo All
(rewind) function.

Thanks for the recommendation.
