I have an email that contains pictures. However the
pictures are not displayed. They are displayed as a box
w/an X in the corner.

Try e-mailing yourself a small picture (file size not above 100 Kb, or have
XP resize a large photo file automatically when e-mailing) and see if you
receive it properly. If you do, I would suspect that the Red X in the box
indicates that the size of the file for the pictures in your e-mail is too
large. It is above the limit set by your internet provider and therefore not
displayed. The sender would have to send only one picture instead of several
or reduce their size.
