Microsoft Outlook & Outlook Express

QUESTION:

Is it possible to backup Outlook Express and import the backup into
Microsoft outlook which comes with Microsoft Office? I'm very familiar with
backing up Outlook Express and importing the backup.

I am in the process of migrating from Windows 98se to Windows XP with
upgrade to any of the Windows Vista Operating Systems. My New XP system is
fully capable of handling any Vista system.

My old Windows 98se has Microsoft Works Ver 4 installed. Compared to Version
8 on Windows XP, Ver 4 is truly a winner. It has all of the necessities of a
small home business. It is so much like the expensive Microsoft Office 2003
for Students/Teachers which came installed on my new Windows XP.

I was so familiar with the 2003 Microsoft Office software that I
immediately began creating tables, invoices for my customers and business
letter head with headers and footers. .....all of this without reading one
line of the help pages. It was and is a natural progression from Microsoft
Works Version 4.

Personally, I think that the ridiculous price ($400.00) for Microsoft Office
is outrageous when compared to Microsoft Works Version 4. Templates and
databases for all of your business needs are included in Microsoft Works Ver
4 and is so similar to this OVER PRICED OFFICE SOFTWARE.

I'm interested because of the Access Database Application and Web
Forms.....not available in Microsoft Works. I prefer to have absolute
control over html on my Website.

PROBLEM:
When I installed the "2003 Microsoft Office Try Out" on Windows XP I could
no longer access Outlook Express, because the installation process was
telling me "YOU DO NOT HAVE AN EMAIL CLIENT! Do you want Microsoft Outlook
as your default email client?" I refused because I could not access my
customers in Outlook Express.

Looking back, I'm hopeful that the installation process would have
transferred my Outlook Express files into Microsoft Outlook.

Naturally, I have issues with this. I have hundreds of active shoppers,
merchants, flea marketers, and fund risers on my email list. Therefore, I
immediately deleted Microsoft Office 2003 for Teachers/Students from my new
XP computer.

I began reinstalling my backup files for Outlook Express, and found out that
everything was still available.

Over the next few days or weeks, I will be upgrading to Windows Vista
Ultimate or Business. Any Information on Microsoft Outlook and Outlook
Express will be helpful.

Office 2007 is such a huge leap from previous versions, I can't even begin
to summarize in this in such a small space. The big difference between
Professional and Standard editions that Professional includes Access and
Publisher. It's highly likely that as a home users and students (and many
business users) won't ever use Access, so you can save yourself some coin by
going with Standard edition (which includes all the usual suspects: Word,
Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook). Do yourself a favor and get Office 2007
today. You'll be amazed at how much it's been improved.

No. Outlook will import directly from Outlook Express (althoguh it's better
to export messages from Outlook Express to Outlook) with no intervening file
creation. If you have a folder containing Outlook Express's files but you
do not have OE configured to access that folder, then Outlook can't do
anything with it.

Restore the OE files on the XP system and configure OE to use them. Install
Outlook so that it's working. Then you'll be able to use OE to export the
OE data to Outlook for the messages and use Import in Outlook to import the
OE contacts and rules into Outlook.

I think it's outrageous compared to ANYTHING.

You should be able to use OE and Outlook both at the same time on the same
machine no matter which is your default mail client. I do.
Looking back, I'm hopeful that the installation process would have
transferred my Outlook Express files into Microsoft Outlook.

If you have OE configured and working on a machine, installing Outlook
should detect the use of OE and ask you if you want to transfer the data.

Keep in mind that Office 2007 for Students and Teachers does not contact
Outlook at all.

Hi Brian.

My question is similar. I want to migrate from 2000/XP to 2007/Vista. I
use Outlook for 1 business and OE for another business. In 2007/Vista,
however, Microsoft Mail cannot share my Outlook contacts, so I have to look
to moving the account that was on OE to Outlook.

On OE I have a very substantive archive of emails, organized in
year/month/send or receive folders. In OE I can immediately access any of
these files from the Folders area by clicking on the Archive file and
following the tree down (for example, 2006/May/Received).

Is there a way I can move my OE to Outlook 2007, and keep the Archive
accessible in the same way from the Folders area?

If so, I assume that I can move emails from the current folder, for example
from the current Inbox, to the Archive file, say when I've finished with
February 2007 emails. And will I be able to back up this account separately
from the other?

Since you have both sets of mail on the XP machine, migrate it all into
Outlook, then transfer the Outlook PST to the Vista machine, add it (with
File>Open>Outlook Data File) to OL 2007. If you want everything separate on
the Vista machine, use two mail profiles.

Separate PSTs would be my approach, performing the transfer to Outlook on
the XP machine.

In Outlook? Sure, if it's a separate PST.

Thanks, Brian, I'll give this a try (maybe). Or I may just keep running
Outlook and Microsoft Mail separately, and just update my contacts in
Microsoft Mail (export Outlook contacts as csv, then import into Microsoft
Mail) every couple of weeks. When I can get it to work (another challenge)
my Treo will synch with the Outlook contacts, so business 1 and the Treo will
always be up to date.
