Microsoft Onecare Live prevents networking

I installed and ran Microsoft Onecare Live Family Safety. Other computers on
my home network could not access the computer running Onecare. The computer
running Onecare could not access other computer either. The firewall was
turned completely off.

As soon as I removed Onecare my network worked perfectly again.

Peter,

This appears to be a feature of OneCare.

I have enabled "sharing and connections" in the Windows Firewall part of
Onecare settings as described in the KB that you reference. But I still get
intermittent, but mostly bad, behavior. All my PCs are connected by wireless.
I suspect that it might help if I wire up one (the Win XP Pro), let it
nominate itself as Master browser and then just leave that computer on all
the time...

Well, after you fix the problem with Wanker^h^h^h^h^h^ OneCare, you may indeed
have to tune the browser setup. That's when the problem becomes intermittent,
or chronic.

Chuck,

I am going to re-install Live OneCare and look for those settings. I will
let you know how it goes.

Thanks, Peter. Please provide as many details as you may find interesting.
This could be of value to a few Windows users.

Chuck,

I reinstalled Windows OneCare, changed the settings like you suggested, and
everything works fine.

I guess my criticism would be of OneCare. If I am running Windows XP and
install a microsoft Windows program, it should not disable a Windows network.
I think that most users would not be able to pinpoint the problem and would
probably have to reinstall Windows XP to get their netwok functioning again.
A home network is not always in use so it was a two weeks before I noticed
that there was a problem with my home network. This makes it very difficult
for an average user to pinpoint a solution. It was fortunate that I have an
above average knowledge of computers.

Thanks for your assistance.

Peter,

That's a valid concern. The whole thing really shouldn't be necessary though.
Why is it necessary? Because of the hackers. The asswipes that want to exploit
OUR computers for THEIR use. Which necessitates OneCare and similar
"solutions", where we only partially trust the other computers on our LAN.

I have been having this exact same problem since installing Onecare Live on
my new Dell E1505 with Windows XP Pro.

I fooled around with the settings as described in the knowledge base article
and it worked for awhile -- I was able to access the other computers on my
network. But, now -- 24 hrs. later -- the problem has returned and I can't
get it to access my home network even if I change the Advanced settings in
the firewall.

Internet access and email is working fine. I just can't get to the computers
on my local network. All computers run Windows XP Pro and the server I have
runs Windows Small Business Server 2003. The other computers can all talk to
each other just fine (they are running Symantec firewalls).

This is getting frustrating...

Well, to follow up on my own post...

I set the firewall advances settings to allow all connections from all
computers and this allowed me to access all computers on my home network.

I then changed back to allow access to computers on my home network and I am
still able to access all computers on my home network. I assume that this
setting provides more protection than allowing access by all computers?

Anyway, for now the problem seems solved. I have read elsewhere that anytime
there is an update to Onecare that it again breaks the firewall. Time will
tell...
