Microsoft Office Word and Excel 2003---HELP!!!!!!

Hello. I am having a bit of trouble with my Microsoft Office Word 2003 and
Excel 2003 programs. Some how, these programs have become locked and will
not allow me to type in them. When I try to type, the bottom task bar says,
"Modification unable to occur because the document is locked." It is as if
these programs have been put in a read-only format only accidentally. How do
I fix this? Are there any hot keys I can use to solve this problem? Help!!!
I need to type a paper and I can't figure this out!

If they are trial programs, they must be activated or they
lock after five boots. If they are retail versions they
lock after 30 days (I think).
