Microsoft Office Beta Test Drive Setup

N

MickeyMouse is offering a M$ Office Beta Test Drive Setup. You can test
drive the beta by going here:

http://www.runaware.com/microsoft/en-us/office2007/td

OK, so that's not so interesting in and of itself. BUT, when one plugs in
the hostname into Netcraft's "What's That Site Running", it comes up with
an interesting conclusion:

http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=runaware.com

Here's MickeyMouse's Office Beta site running on Linux! Speaks volumes about
how insignificant MickeyMouse thinks Linux is in the real world and
certainly makes one wonder why MickeyMouse couldn't run this site on their
own servers rather than having to rely on a Linux server. Could it be that
they required a robust web server to handle the numerous hits/connections
such a beta site required? Is this an admission by MickeyMouse that an
Apache/Linux solution was the only way they could accomplish what they were
trying to do with this Test Drive site?

I have no idea why MickeyMouse has gone this route with this particular
site, but it certainly is interesting. :)

Accessing the site from my Linux box gives me this:

"BROWSER OR OPERATING SYSTEM NOT COMPATIBLE

Your Browser or Operating System is not compatible with the Test Drive
System. The Test Drive System supports the following:

* Windows 98, 2000 and XP
* Internet Explorer 5.5 and later"

Ironic that although hosted on a Linux box, Test Drive will only accept
Windoze to run from that site.

Would be interested in knowing if anyone running Windoze and Firefox is able
to get beyond this message or does MickeyMouse require one to run their
insecure IE browser to test drive this beta?

I hate to interupt your tedious posturing and interject some facts, but it
isn't a Microsoft website.

Running the latest version of Firefox on XP and I got the same thing you
got...not compatible browser.

Boy, are you gullible. The site is located in Sweden! Just because the site
LOOKS like a Microsoft site doesn't make it one.

Ever heard of a phish?

Go ahead. Download stuff from "runaware.com." You'll probably get a passle
of malware.

It is not a phish. Go to this site:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/beta/testdrive.mspx?showIntro=n

and click on the button that says "Test drive Microsoft Office". You will
end up on a runaware.com site hosting a Citrix server where you can test
drive Office 2007 online. Microsoft has obviously outsourced the hosting of
the online test drive. While it may be ironic that the site is on a Linux
server I don't see it as any earth shattering change in policy by Microsoft.

Is that at all related to a fish? That seems to be your intellectual level.

I doubt it, as I noted in the OP, Linux boxes cannot get beyond the first
connect. And why would I want to download MickeyMouse Office when Open
Office is better and FREE? Only Wintards spend money when it isn't
necessary.

Do you think quality and price are the only things that determine a buying
decision? As you move up the decision-making ladder, you'll find that other
considerations are more important.

For example, price is not a problem; price is merely an expense. If the
price of a product fits within the budget, price is not an issue.

That's assuming of course that profit - what's left after all expenses are
paid - is not THE main priority of any business. At the enterprise level
expense budgets are constantly being slashed to increase profits. The OSS
model is becoming more and more meaningful to the enterprise. For the
individual user, spending hundreds of dollars on MickeyMouse Office or
getting Open Office for FREE and using the money saved to provide for ones
family should be a no brainer.
