Microsoft NET Framework 1.1 sp1

Bob

I'm unable to install the recent update from Microsoft on Microsoft NET
Framework 1.1 sp1. I have been able to download the update but it
continually fails on the install. The reason it gives for the failure is an
error code of 643. I am running Windows XP sp2. The failure code indicates
a problem with a network adapter on the server. Is anyone else having this
problem?

Try downloading the update directly:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

Been there. Tried that. I downloaded the file and executed it. A dialogue
box came up stating "Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a
folder containing the installation package netfx.msi in the box below."

The "box below" was C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local
Settings\Temp\IXP000.tmp\netfx.msi. My hard drive does not have the sub
folder \IXP000.tmp nor is the file netfx.msi anywhere on my hard drive.

I clicked OK and received a dialoge box that stated "Error 1706: No valid
source could be found for product Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1. The windows
installer cannot continue.

Open your Control Panel, then open the "Add or Remove Programs" applet.
Scroll down and look for an entry titled "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1".

If you have no such entry, then you do not have it installed and you should
install it before attempting to install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.
If you do have it, then uninstall it, then reinstall it. Afterward, install the
Service Pack 1 for .NET Framework.

That seems to have taken care of the problem, Carey. The "Add or Remove
Programs" applet does not show the sp1 there; but the Windows upgrade web
page indicates that I am updated (it no longer offers me the Microsoft .NET
Framwork 1.1 sp1 program for download).

Thanks,
Bob

Carey,
This is probably an elementary question, but what is .NET Fframework and
what is it used for? I'm offered the SP1 update in Windows Updates and see
that I have version 1.1 installed in Add/Remove Programs, but am not sure
what it is used for.

Like I said, an elementary question!

Thanks Carey,
One more question. If I'm not a developer, but just a PC user, do I need
to maintain the up-to-date .net framework for my PC to function properly
with the websites, etc?
Thanks
Charlie

It's advisable to do so. .NET is not just for developers, it's the "new"
foundation upon which new applications are being built. At this time
there are not too many out there that use it, but that will change with
time, which is why SP2 includes it now by default. More and more freeware
and shareware will require it too, so everyone will need it eventually -
keep it up-to-date!
