While opening a website, I would get the "Microsoft
internet explorer has encountered a problem & needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were
in the middle of something, the information you were
working on might be lost." It will ask me if I want to
send an error report & it will restart internet explorer
for me. The error report contains the following:

APPName: iexplore.exe
AppVer: 6.1.8293.0
ModName: msvcrt.dll
ModVer: 6.1.8293.0
Offset: 000154a7

I encounter this error message most of the time. There
is
only one website that I can get to on a regular basis
without encountering the problem. I am running Windows
98
& using a wireless router on my laptop.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Since you did not post necessary information such as the version of Windows
or IE you are using, I can only make a general suggestion. You might try the
following and see if it helps:


MSCVRT.DLL Problems - Missing File:

What this message usually means is that this file is damaged or corrupted
in some way. You could try downloading and replacing this file again from
here which will normally fix this problem

To replace the file do the following:

NOTE: before doing any of this, you must have a file extraction program
(such as "WinZip" or "WinRar") AND you must have the "Hide file extensions
for known file types" turned OFF. Here is how to do this:
1) Open Windows Explorer, click on Tools, click on "Folder Options...".
2) in the "Folder Options" window, click on the "View" tab at the top.
3) click on the "Show hidden files and folder", or "Show all files" button
so that all hidden and system files are visible.
4) make sure "Hide file extensions for known file types" is UNCHECKED.

Then......

1) download the replacement MSVCRT.DLL file to a folder somewhere on your
computer (or to the desktop).
2) Extract the file using something like WinZip or WinRar.
3) Rename the file by "Right clicking" on it and selecting "Rename", rename
it to "msvcrt.new".
4) Cut and Paste the "msvcrt.new" file into your "C:\Windows\System" folder,
(simply "Right Click" the "msvcrt.new" file and select "Cut", then open an
Explorer window or just any file window, and at the top where it says
"Address" type "C:\Windows\System", then just "Right Click" in the File area
and select "Paste")
5) (This part is gonna take timing) now restart your computer, and as soon
as the "Shut Down" screen goes away keep pressing the "F8" and/or "Ctrl"
keys repeatedly as fast as you can untill the "Selective startup menu"
appears. (you'll know this menu because it will be a black and white text
menu with about 5 options, one of which will be "Command Prompt only" or
something like that.)
6) from the selective startup menu, select command prompt only, this will
bring you to the old MS-Dos prompt.
7) Type "cd windows\system" and hit "Enter".
8) Type "ren msvcrt.dll msvcrt.old" and hit "Enter".
9) Type "ren msvcrt.new msvcrt.dll" and hit "Enter".
10) Restart your computer either with the "Reset" button or the
"Ctrl-Alt-Del" method. This should reset your system and have resolved the
problem.

It is possible you have a hijacker, malware, spyware or parasites on your
system that can cause this problem. In addition to running your updated

Jan...I got your reply to my problem a few days ago, which is the same
problem listed here. I still am unable to fix my problem. I do not get
anything listed under Modname or Modver. Is there anyway to delete Explorer
and start over and if I do will this solve my problem. I am about to throw
this thing out the window.

Did you try the information that I have provided for Susie? Did it work for
you? If you have XP, no, you CAN NOT uninstall IE. IE is an intricate part
of XP and CAN NOT be uninstalled, so please do not try. However.... .you
can repair it. I don't recall your previous post right off, but, do you
have XP, or SP2? Here is the information for reinstalling both IE for XP
and the IE6. Although, I can not assure that it will resolve your problem.

I would suggest that if you do have SP2, and you do not wish to go through
with the repair, you may want to uninstall it and wait until a later date to
reinstall.

However, should you choose to repair, you MUST reinstall ALL the updates
that you may have already installed once you have reinstalled IE, either
way.

ships with Windows XP. This feature only becomes available after you
upgrade to a newer version. This is normal and has been this way since

There is no direct Repair function for IE6 in XP. Here are some
alternatives:

1. With XP you need to go to Start|Run and type "sfc /scannow"
(without the quotes and notice the space between the c and the /.)
Have your XP CD handy and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it
takes a while. This will do the same thing as Repair IE6 for XP but a
lot more, that is find any corrupt system files and replace them. It
does not, however, re-register the various software components (except
possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

Be aware that under certain circumstances (Win2k before SP4 - see mskb
814510,
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q814510) sfc
can erroneously overwrite (restore over) previously installed files
from certain "hotfixes" which will then need to be re-installed. To
check for this, after running sfc, open a Cmd window and enter
"qfecheck /v /l:c:\" (without the quotes). If you don't have qfecheck
installed, it can be obtained for XP here:

without the quotes, exactly as shown, and select the appropriate entry.

3. If you find that you need to do a re-install of IE6 then you can
consider the following, I can't verify this for XP (I'm Win2k - it
works there, and I've had good reports from XP users), but you might
want to give it a try at your own risk. Again, enter this at Start|Run
without the quotes and be careful about the spacing:

"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\windows\inf\ie.inf"

IE Repair with the default FixIE.inf would do for either NT5.
