Why when I ask to contact a support representative, I am
expected to get a "passport", which requires me to fill
out an information-sharing agreement with Microsoft? Why
do I need to enter into some kind of contract with this
company that is currently inconveniencing me with problems
it is having with itself? Of all the nerve.

Other expert posts seem to suggest turning off "Enable 3rd party browser
extensions" in advanced IE options.

Read more carefully. That suggestion is made as a *diagnostic*.
If it changes your symptoms you are also advised to check for bad BHO
or malware.

To do that you download and use some third-party tools such as
BHODemon (from DefinitiveSolutions) or Ad-Aware (from LavaSoftUSA)
or SpybotSD (from Patrick M. Kolla).

Good luck

Did this, and for a moment, it appeared that that did the trick.
Unfortunately, IE6 got just a bit further than before and then crashed with
the same message.
Not funny any more !

Is this related to code (in one form or another) that specific websites
download and run when the browser opens them ?

Given that so many people are reporting these errors, is there a
consolidated MS response ? I read one of the KB references, but it seemed to
apply to a specific offending product (plug-in). I installed IE6, and have
had problems ever since - no chance to install any toolbars etc.
My current (today's) list of sites that have caused IE6 to crash:
www.whichcamera.co.uk
www.neff.co.uk
www.siemens.co.uk/default.asp?ref=contact_us
www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/... - how about that for irony!

I am running Win98.
