Microsoft Interactive Training - stuck in PAUSE mode

A friend of mine has a new Dell Dimension 3000, running WinXP Home.
When she tries to run the MS Interactive Training program, she sees the
menu of topics but the "dashboard" controls are stuck in PAUSE mode
(the PAUSE button looks like it's pushed in). The other control
buttons--STOP, PLAY, JUMP AHEAD, etc.--simply do not work and the PAUSE
button stays active.

I have seen this subject in two other posts (one here and one on the
Dell Forums site), but no one has offered any definite resolution.
Does anyone have an answer or suggestion?

TIA.

Been there, done that. Several complaints on the Dell Forums site re
the same problem. No solutions that work. Dell Chat Support was no
help and suggested calling one of their 800 numbers; no help there
either. Another rep is supposed to telephone back tomorrow. Everyone
wants to pass the buck.

I have learned of a solution that worked for my friend. Am posting it
here to assist others who may be searching this group for answers. The
solution applies to Dell Dimension and Inspiron systems that shipped
after July 15, 2004:

After powering on the computer, press CTRL F11 once (during the Dell
splash page) which will then launch the DELL PC RESTORE BY SYMANTEC
utility and guide you through restoring your computer software to
factory-issued status. After my friend did this, the Microsoft
Interactive Training program worked just fine. Of course, she lost all
her data, the programs she installed herself, and the tweaks and
settings she made, but that's the tradeoff. Remember to back up your
data before using this utility!
