Microsoft intellimouse explorer 3.0 dies off

I have a windows XP machine with all the patches using the latest
intellimouse explorer software driver version 11.4 and intellipoint
4.10.0851. After using the machine for about 10 minutes the mouse stops
working. I have to unplug the usb mouse for a few seconds and plug it back
in but then it dies off more quickly including the optical light going off.
and so it progresses until I reboot. None of my other USB items are having
issues. I have tried a few of the same mice all with the same issue.

Any guesses/suggestions besided getting a different brand mouse?
