Microsoft Games

Bill Davis Jr

I like to play a couple of the games that came with Microsoft Vista
(Solitare, Minesweeper, Chess). I could load them from the Games
Panel.

Now when I try I get the following error message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing
this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control
panel."

Anyone seen this error before? Where is the Set Association control
panel?

Thanks,

Bill

yes, it happened on Betas as well as now on RTM.

I enjoy Games Explorer and I pray that it does not show this error, because
once it appears there is no solution to it.

On some Vista Installs it is working, on some not - that is a weired bug,
indeed.

I have reported it back in the RC1 to MS, but nobody seemed to have done
something .

Hello,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft newsgroup!

From your post, my understanding on this issue is: you can't start games
from game explorer. If I'm off base, please feel free to let me know.

Thank SJ for his key in.

I find two possible causes for this specific issue:
1. The link of the game is changed. Check the links of the game in
Start->All programs->Games.
2. Some third party software was used to edit registry, like removing the
shortcut arrow by editing the registry keys.
These are what I know by now, please let me know whether they can help you.

Well it looks like I know what the error is. It is number 2. I changed
the Registry with regedit to remove the shortcut arrow on Desktop
icons.

Thanks again for the quick response.

I am also having this problem suddenly. Is there a way to fix this
issue? The Associations seem to be set correctly so I am a bit stuck
at the moment.

My issue was I used Regedit to remove the shortcut arrow on the
Desktop Icons. I went back into the registry and renamed (can't
remember the exact edit) back to the original and all is working
again.

My only solution is to not remove the Desktop icon shortcut arrow.
Removing that killed any games from launching withn the Games Explorer
window.

I know it is ugly and looks better without it.

I have experienced a similar problem, but haven't done any regedit work or
installed any software.

I built a PC based on the Intel BLKDG965WHMKR motherboard. I installed
Windows Vista Home Premium, with no problems. I then began updating drivers.
After installing the Intel Raid Matrix driver update from the Intel site, I
began experiencing intermittent problems. The problems have been:

1. Most of the games in the games explorer won't start. I've tried
double-clicking and right-clicking then selecting play. Neither works for
some of the games.
2. Occasionally, when brining up the control panel, it will open up but
show as empty - no icons or anything else in the window.

The problem is intermittent - some days everything seems fine, other days
the problems are there.

I've installed no software beyond Windows Vista and a few drivers since
building the machine.

Any help will be appreciated. In the meantime, I'm going to review the
driver updates, and look into updating the board's bios.

Kind regards,
John Thorsen
