microsoft excel shows text as number

I have a space delimited text file that I open in Excel. One of the entries
929227E51 keeps showing up as a number in Excel. I wish to avoid this as
929227E51 represents an identifier to a security. How do I do this?

Since you open a text file you should get the text import wizard starting,
in step 3 you can select the column with the
identifiers and under column data format select text, then click finish

Import into Excel using:

Data > Import Enternal Data > Import Data...

Tell the Wizard that the field is Text and not General
