SEATTLE (AP) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) must pay $1.52 billion in damages to
telecommunications equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) SA for violating two
patents related to digital music, a federal jury ruled Thursday.

They'll appeal it to the 9th Circuit. That's more than 2 nights valet
parking and a movie for even Bill.

Which they shouldn't have to because they purchased a licence from the
Official licensor Fraunhofer.

If you're trying to be clever and having a bash at Microsoft, you might
want to remember that this decision could affect everyone who bought a
licence from Fraunhofer.

That will take years to settle and if Microsoft does have to pay, Bill
Gates has that kind of money in his couch cushions at home and in the spare
change jar. No big deal.

Why do you think that Microsoft is a privately held company and that Bill
Gates himself will have to pay the fine?

In other words, they shouldn't fine MS. MS doesn't have to pay fines, WE
DO. It will come out of our pockets, or more specifically out of our stock
prices that are buried in the 401K packages so we won't even notice we're
paying it.

That's a great business model! Take out a patent. Keep quiet while the
invention grows in popularity then when everyone least expects it hit them
with a lawsuit. If Alcatel-Lucent had spoken sooner we would probably now
all be using Ogg Vorbis or some other codec.
This claim should fail on the grounds that the claim should have been
publicised sooner and that the action was unreasonably delayed!

someone else's patented stuff... tee hee : - (
