Microsoft certification?

I've just finished A+ and am now certified. However I've noticed that alot of
jobs ask for microsoft certification or CISCO these days. I'm just wondering
what is the better out ot the two if I just want a standard i.t support job?
Also would the MCDST be sufficient or would i need to do the MCSA also? I
hear the MCSA is a bit more complex. Does the MCDST also teach you about the
server and user accounts as alot of i.t support roles ask for these skills?
Any help much appreciated. Dave Uk

There is no such thing as a "standard i.t [sic] support job." They're
all different. It depends entirely upon the specific employer and the
requirements of each specific position. There is no "Silver Bullet"
certification. And very few employers will hire based only upon
certifications; at best, they'll help you get an interview. You'll need
to be able to demonstrate relevant hands-on experience and practical
knowledge, which is quite different from the purely theoretical
knowledge required to pass most certification tests.

HI Bruce thats strange we have the same surname. Are you in the UK? Thanks
for the advice. I've worked as i.t support before for a training company, QA
training London and several other companys back in the days of Novell but
have been out of the game for a while and thought some certification and
training would help. I suppose getting microsoft and Cisco would be best but
like you say you cant be hands on. Cheers and hey who know maybe we're
related?

Just completing the required courses and getting "certified" isn't
enough: you will need hands-on experience. Lots of it.

A+ is never a waste, but, it's a very common certification and not much
use in the job market....

Thanks for not very fruitful advice no offense. I've decided im gonna do MCSA
even though its a bit harder the the MCDST I'm in for the long haul. I've
already done the Network+ training so thats part of it. Security+ should be
interesting too. Luckily one of my pals works for a big tv company so im
hoping a foot in the door there might be on the cards. In some ways your
right guys all depends on the employer and getting hands on experience. Which
alot of places make a nightmare, prats. If all falis i have another trick up
my sleeve. Ok thanks for the response anyhow
