Microsoft Antispyware malfunction

-- Am having a lot of trouble with my computer on and off. I have a Compaq
SR1550NX purchased this past August. Windows XP operating system With
Norton Security. Microsoft Antispyware came on the computer. I have run
Nortons and have no viruses that it detects (it has been updated) I cannot
open Microsoft Antispyware to check for spyware. I am getting several error
messages which read as follow when I first try to open: ERROR 1904
C:\WINDOWS\system32\GCCollection.dll failed to register. HRESULT-2147220473.
Contact your support Personnel. Followed by: UNEXPECTED ERROR! QUITTING
I contacted HP tech support and followed their instructions several times
for uninstalling and reinstalling. When I try to uninstall I get: ERROR
1905 Module C:\Programfiles\microsoftantispywar\gcAssoaplib.dll failed to
unregister. HRESULT -2147220472 Contact support...Tech support then told me
to do a system restore. I did one restore with no success opening
antispyware; did a second restore with no success and now when I try to
restore to an earlier date I get a message saying that the system is unable
to restore to that date, pick another; which I have tried to do several times
with no success.
HP Tech support has a software download for sending my computer info to
them to help in finding the problem- however- my system will not do it. It
acts as though it has downloaded the software- but when I try to send the
computer system info and begin a chat session- nothing happens...... I am at
my wits end. Can anyone help?

Try removing MSAS and all associated files then reinstall MSAS. If the
problem persists it is probably an XP bug,
Good luck and a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Hello JAK,
Go with Ira's Advise but also check this:
Log in as the administrator level user who will most often use the program.

I have tried doing that several times-in fact it no long shows up in my
program listings- but I get error 1905
C:\Programfiles\microsoftantispywar\gcAssoaplib.dll failed to> : unregister.
HRESULT -2147220472 Contact support... My problem is: how do I get it out
of my registry so that I can reinstall it?

I have tried uninstalling several times (it no longer lists in my probgram
files) but at the end of the uninstall I get the error message

What I need to know is How do I remove it from the registry so that I can
reinstall it?

Hi JAK,
Download and install Ccleªner
http://www.ccleaner.com/download124.asp

Reboot to Safe Mode

Please ensure you are doing this under a Administrator accºunt

Clear prefetch files by going to Start menu and Run and typing

prefetch

and then click OK.

Open Ccleaner and press "Run Cleaner" from the menu choose 'Issues' and then
press scan for issues, Repair any fºund.

Thank you Engel. I followed your instructions for downloading and installing
the ccleaner. Then I rebooted in Safe Mode then did the start>run>prefetch
step. And it appears as though my registry is now clean. And Microsoft
Antispyware was completely uninstalled. HOWEVER- When I went to
Microsoft.com to re-download it and reinstall- I continue to get this error:
Error 1904 Module c:\WINDOWS\system32\GCCollection.dll failed to register.
HRESULT -2147220473. Contact your support personnel. (UNfortunately my
support personnel (HP) only tell me to uninstall and reboot- however, this
does not work.) ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO HOW I CAN NOW RE-INSTALL IT? Thank
you again for all this help. jak

Hi JAK,

Visit Microsoft's site and Download MSAS again and choose to save file
NOT run it from MS.
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Turn off yourf Internet conectiºn.

Shut off your Antivirus utility, also turn off any utility running in the
task bªr.

Open Ccleaner and press "Run Cleaner" from the menu choose 'Issues' and
then press scan for issues, Repair any fºund.

Now run setup

Rebººt

Let us know how it works ºut.

I get the same error. I have tried all the suggestions and still nothing. My
machine is clean so I know that there is something wrong with the download.

jak is back Engel;
Thanks for the suggestions. Everything went well -until I tried to run
it after saving it as you suggested earlier. Still receiving the same error
code 1904
-- C:\WINDOWS\system32\GCCollection.dll failed to register.
HRESULT-2147220473. Looks like I will just have to write this one off as a
total failure to compute! Thanks for the helpful suggestions though.

I am getting the same problem in my normal user account on my laptop, however
I created a new user out of curiosity and it loaded ok but no matter what I
do it will not install or run under my normal login, under every other login
on the same computer it works. All I can think of is that my normal profile
is somehow corrupt, yet everything else works ok.

I will say that MASW did work ok until I was hit with SPYAXE. MASW caught it
but since then has not worked under my normal login, login as a different
user and it works. I give up, I am going to transfer everything to a new
login.

I have created a new profile for myself and loaded antispyware successfully.
It seems that the problem is a corruption in the original profile, why it
should be corrupt I do not know but the corruption seems to be connected to
user and admin rights. I am still trying to find out what and why.
