Hello,

I have a Sony Vaio PC. The hard drive on it was partitioned with all the
data for a recover when it was configured by Sony. I checked - the hard
drive has many bad sectors. I put in a new drive and installed XP on it but
I can't access the old hard drive even though it is recognized in the bios
and by windows. Windows says the drive is corrupt. Any thoughts on how I
might be able to get all the docs, xls, etc off the old hard drive. I
believe when I tried to boot from that drive it said something like MFT or
MSFT is corrupt.

I ran a utility from Hiren's which checked for bad sectors - it found about
550 and was able to repair about 480 of them.

No, Windows cannot handle a drive whose Master File Table is corrupt. This
table contains all of the file names, etc. ,etc.
This is an instance where a backup of the files is about the only solution.
Somebody somewhere may be able to help, but that help will not come cheap.
