MFC42u.dll missing

When I try to defrag, I get an error box saying MFC42u.DLL is missing. When
I insert the OS reinstall disc, it says it says the version on the computer
is newer than the one on the disc, I assume because of online updates. Is
there a way to reinstall just that one file?

I'm not a tech guy, so please type slowly. Thanks!

The simplest way to fix this problem is to use System Restore
to return the machine to a point before the problem became
apparent.

I you're unsure how to use System Restore, click Start / Help,
then search for "System Restore".

Might not be necessary to do the repair. Shut down the computer. Re-start
in Safe Mode and perform the defrag in Safe Mode.

Same recipe as before: Click Start / Help, then search for
Safe Mode. There is lots and lots of help built into Windows!

I have a similar problem. I try to defrag and I get a Message box titled:
"MMC.EXE.. Unable to locate component"
'This application has failed to start because MFC42u.DLL was not found.
Reinstalling the application may fix this problem'.

When I first got this message I downloaded the 'MFC42u.DLL' file from the
internet and installed it via Winzip. However the same message appears
when I try again to defrag. I have also tried to defrag in safe mode but met
the same problem.
How can I get the MFC42u.DLL file to be " LOCATABLE"?
I am wary about trying to Re-install windows XP Pro as I may come up
against a
problem as I have already installed XP PRO once and it's on a single licence.

I also get the same mesage when I try to access Wordpad so I suppose it will
happen with every file that uses mfc42u.dll

The DLL may need to be registered:
From Start open Run and enter "regsvr32 mfc42u.dll" (without the
quotes) and hot Enter. Try the program you want to use again.

Tried that and got an error box titled as : Regsvr
Message:
Loadlibrary (mfc42u.dll) failed.
The specified Module could not be found.

Hi Tomarm

Where did you install the file after downloading it? It should be in
C:\Windows\System32. If that is where you put it, could you try this?
Open a Command window (Start | Run, type command <enter>) then at the
prompt type PATH <enter>. What does it say?

I had installed it inProgram files. However I have since fixed the problem.
Before fixing it I could not defrag,System restore wouldn't restore, and
wordpad wouldn't function. Same error message... mfc42u.dll cant be found.
However I reinstalled Win XP Pro and all systems now working. No longer
getting the messages. Thanks for your response "Nightowl"
