meta-data crossplatform?

Could someone who really knows please tell me if meta-data tagging in Vista
is going to actually tag the fields appropriate to the file and the file
only, meaning that the file could go to Linux or Mac and the tag data still
be visitble.

I.e. universal

Thanks

Thanks for your reply but this doesn't really answer my question as to
weather data inputted into a file with Vista will actually universally remain
as text, readable by any other platform or weather its kept in an MS Vista
only database - which would be disasterous.

The articles both resonate the same fears; that of exposure to sensitive
meta-data and the advocation of its removal! I'm not for that at all, of
course for business there are factors to weight up and these articles were
both in december 2005 so they may be out of date.

So does anybody know if meta-data is written into the file for everybody to
use or just Vista?

That's because I was looking for an answer to your question and couldn't get
it for a while. I was just in a chat with a MSFT Technet evangelist who
presents regularly and his response to this question was:

"The MetaTags are exposed so if there are features/apps on those OSes that
can access it, it is readable"

I'd take that to mean give it a try.

I would strongly suggest if it does not get answered here to your
satisfaction, to search engine "msdn blogs meta tags" and "technet blogs
meta tags" and if this issue is not discussed on one of the blogs, then you
can get an answer from someone expert in that area by signing in and using
the comments or the direct email.

Good luck, and let us know what you find out.

I haven’t read any of the blogs. But intuitively and from what I’ve seen so
far, any metadata that can go into the file header will go into the file
header, and will be cross-platform. Any metadata that goes to the search
index only can’t be transferred to another platform because there’s no place
to put it in the file.

This isn’t directly related to employees who write goofy embarrassing things
in their metadata. But for your own purposes, you can create copies of files
with metadata removed. For example you can select a bunch of MP3 files,
right-click and choose Properties, click the Details tab, and click Remove
Properties and Personal Information. Then pull out whatever you don’t want
to share.

Hi, well its been some time but I found out that the meta-data is
encapsulated into the file if possible, so with JPEG that's no problem but
with GIF then it is added to MS Vista own d/b.

But this means that the metadata travels where the file goes, which means
cross platform. There is also a 'new' standard being pushed called XMP which
is to either replace EXIF or ITCP (I can't remember) but its supported by
Adobe so there's no bad stuff going on.

As far as I can tell MS have done everything properly and to please me, so
I'm happy, you might want to check these links:

MS image blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/pix/default.aspx

XMP: http://www.adobe.com/products/xmp/

"Enables creation of "smart assets" that retain context when passed across
multiple file formats, software applications, devices, and databases"

"Enables flexible search and retrieval of rich media across diverse file
formats and databases"

"Based on open standards"
