Messy Hardware Install

I am havingg problems installing new USB hardware (HP Printer and Motorola
Phone)
Althought I have installed latest correct driver and the printer works,
every time it sees the printer it tells me that it can not finish installing
it. I have uninstalled /installed it several times. With phone, although the
software is there it wants to re-install every time I connect the phone and
will not work till I do.
I have posted both problems together as I suspect they are connected.

Did you connect the printer and phone to your PC before installing the
software? Follow manufacturers instructions. Install software first during
which you will be prompted when to connect it and when to turn it on.
Uninstall & reinstall Printer

Did you follow the installation instructions exactly. Some require the
hardware installed first, others require the software first. Contact
the device manufacturer's for help on the install.

I connected the hardware in the order prompted (the instaler even prompted
userrs to unplug the units if tey were plugged in)
