messenger spam

I started getting these grey boxes with ads in them that
my popup controls don't stop. I eventually went to thier
website and they want $29.95 to fix what they describe as
a flaw in my xp op system. I don't want to pay these
extotioists and I regulary install microsoft auto
updates. I recently did a large download and it took
forever to close all the grey boxes that accumalated.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
