Messenger popups - how to stop them

The only method I know of that works is to turn on a
firewall (the one that comes with Windows XP's dialup
works).

Apart from downloading third-party software, does anyone
know of any other ways to stop the popups? If not, which
third-party software is the most reliable?

if hey are "messenger service" popups, then the only way TO stop them is
a firewall.

What was mentioned here I believe is the only way. But I would suggest
downloading a 3rd party program rather then trusting the Win XP firewall.
That is just my preference. I use a free program called Freesurfer Mk3.
You can go to http://www.kolumbus.fi/eero.muhonen/FS/Support.htm
to download load this program. Like I said it's free. Watchout though they
do have a Freesurfer Companion that runs for 30 days then is disabled unless
you pay for it.
