When I upgraded to Windows XP and subsequently MSN
Messenger, what happened to the ability to have a photo or
picture in the chat dialoug box ?

Most likely what you're using is Windows Messenger, not MSN Messenger, which doesn't have
this functionality.

You'll need to install the latest version of MSN Messenger here:
