Messenger over a network

Is there any way to run messenger over a two computer
home network in XP without connecting to the internet?
If there is can you please explain?

You can't really, without setting up an Exchange IM server or SIP-based communications server
(which would be overkill for what you want).

Instead of using Messenger, you might want to look into something like LanTalk XP instead:
