Messed up Log-in

The computer turns on, and goes all the way to the blue user log-in screen. However, when I tried to log in, it went normally, but it never gets around to displaying the desktop. Instead, (with the mouse cursor still movable) it sits there displaying just the wallpaper, and then after that logs itself off. More log-in attempts just result in the same thing, just faster

I'm not sure where the problem comes from, so I'll just say all of what I did

1. Updated Lavasoft Ad-Aware 6 and Spybot: S&
2. Started an Ad-Aware scan, but ended it a few seconds after because I wanted to run msconfig
3. Ran the Microsoft Configuration Utility (msconfig) and set it to a Diagnostic Startup, and clicked "ok"
4. Waited for a while, then when the "Restart" or "Exit Without Restart" choices popped up, I chose "Restart
5. Restarted fine, and also logged in fine here
6. Ran Ad-Aware (found 304 objects
7. The scan finished with a note that "some objects could not be removed," and I chose to have it run at the next system startup
8. Ran Spybot (found some more ad/spyware), and cleaned those up
9. I think now I restarted the computer, thus yielding the aforementioned problem

Any help/support would be appreciated.

1) Try another user, if you have one.
2) Reboot into safe mode, restore to a point before this started happening.

Well, the problem is that the screen that comes up when you
"log in" is just a wallpaper, without any function. There
isn't even a taskbar or start menu, and control-alt-delete
yields no response. It just goes from log-in screen, to
blank wallpaper screen, to log-in screen.

I hear you problem, clearly. Use the link I posted (which is also in my
sig) to set it all back to default.
