Runtime Error Problem - I can't access My Documents

When I try and access something in My Documents I get

"Pop up title: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe

abnormal program termination"

Any help gratefully accepted!

It may be coincidence, but at roughly the same time I was asked to update
Windows Media Player -- on restarting and accessing the program, it asks me
to finish off the installation by logging in as the administrator, when I am!

(Also ran AVG virus scan, Lavasoft ad-aware, Spybot Search and Destory and
CCleaner)

I have the same problem and cannot find a way to fix it. It has been
driving me nuts and I am ready to do a clean install.
Hopefully someone will respond with an answer, but I have asked here before
and got no responses.

Have you tried a system restore to before the issue occurred?

One way I have found to set up some insurance in case of a situation where
no cure to a problem can be found, and it becomes debilitating, is to use a
drive imaging program to regularly save compressed images of the hard drive
to an external USB drive (I also burn a copy to DVD for redundancy). I keep
multiple images. Then, if needed, individual files can be restored from the
backup, or the complete volume or drive can be restored from the image.

System restore is one useful tool, as is driver rollback, and keeping backup
copies of the registry made with a tool like ERUNT. Each of these tools
has their use, and if nothing works, then restoring a recent image gets you
back running quickly. I believe it is important to have a variety of tools
to fix problems, and have some overlap/redundancy too.

Acronis True Image (currently version 10) is one program for imaging that
works well for many and gets good reviews. Others of this type are Norton
Ghost, and Terabyte Unlimited's Image for Windows and BootIt NG.

I had a similar problem. I couldn't use my printer at all because of a
Runtime error that would pop up and terminate the application. I read this
thread and then tried doing a "System Restore" and it solved the problem for
me as well.
