I use Outlook 2007 and Vista. Sometimes, messages get stuck in my out-box,
and do not get sent during a "Send/Receive."

I see no pattern to this. Sometimes it will happen to an individual
messages. Other times, I will create three messages, putting them all in the
out-box. Two will get sent, but the third one will just sit there, refusing
to be sent. Closing Outlook and even re-booting does not fix the problem.

What causes this and how I fix it?

Maybe you are actually "putting the mail" in the Outbox, as you say. You
cannot manually move mail to the Outbox. You're supposed to press Send to
automatically place mail in the Outbox. If you move it to Outbox without
selecting Send, you have to select Send again in the email in the Outbox. The
same is true if you open or highlight an email in the Outbox before it's
sent. You have to resend it. Note the icons for mail in the Outbox. The ones
that will be sent have a different icon--an envelope with lines in front or
appear italicized. A stuck email will have a static-looking icon.

It's worth pointing out a fairly serious shortcoming in Outlook: if you read
an email that's in the outbox - and don't close it properly - it will no
longer get send and just sits there forever.

If you do want to read an email in the outbox before sending, double click
to open it in the usual way, and then make sure you press its Send button.
DO NOT just press the red 'x' close icon - that will cause the message to
get stuck.

It's a stupid shortcoming to be honest. Outlook Express, Windows Mail and
Windows Live Mail don't do it.

Steve:

Thanks. Interestingly, this only happens on my Outlook Professional
installation, not my Outlook Small Business installation. But now I
understand what to do.
