Messages go to Outbox instead of being sent

We've had Vista and Microsoft Messaging for a couple of months and have 2
accounts ... my husband's e-mail is the default and my e-mail address is
listed as (1).

All worked fine until recently. I can send/reply without a problem. John
can also receive, but now cannot SEND. All his e-mails go to the Outbox, and
if you look at each message's Properties, each shows "(under Composition)"
for Location, Size, Sent, and Received. One of his messages has a blurb
similar to what I've seen other users complain about: "Message could not be
displayed. Windows Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying
this message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try
again." The computer is new and there's plenty of memory available, so that
can't be it.

I worked on-line with one of Dell's support people, probably in India, but
he was stymied, said he'd call me back tonight, but has not done so.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Steve Cochran has graciously developed a utility program that
will remove a stuck message from the Outbox.
Go to http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/
When you start to download the wmutil.zip file,
be sure to choose Save rather than Run.
After it finishes downloading choose Run, then Extract. Then it will
show the extraction folder with two files in it, WMUtil.exe and scxout.dll.
Run WMUtil.exe, wait until the buttons become active, then click on
Clear Outbox. It may take a while. Before you start, make sure
Windows Mail is not running.

Thanks,

Sorry: I should have mentioned that I noticed that solution and downloaded
it, but after I saved it to my desktop, I saw a file called scxout.dll and
WMUtil and not WMUtil.exe. Does that make a difference? Anyway, when i ran
WMUtil, the WMUtil -- www.oehelp.com window popped up, but the box I need to
click on for the fix, "Clear Outbox," is grayed out so that I can't click on
it successfully. For what it's worth, File Statistics and Clean Blank Files
boxes are black and therefore available.

Can you help with the next step? Thanks!

First of all, you need to fix your Windows so that file extensions are
not hidden (a horrible Microsoft default!).
Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View , and
uncheck "Hide extensions for known File types".

Next, go back to http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/
and read the Program Operation notes, specifically:
"If Windows Mail is open or if a current WinMail.exe process is
running, the Database functions are disabled, and they (the WinMail
processes) must be terminated before these features are available.
(If WinMail is closed and these buttons still remain disabled, then
perform a CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and under Processes find WinMail.exe
and click on it, and then click the End Process button.)"

Thanks, Gary -- I followed all your directions (I did need to hit
Control-Shift-Esc to clear the utility) and everything is fixed now. You and
Steve Cochran are both great. Thanks to both of you for sharing!

I have just tried the solution offered by gary VanderMolen and it worked! I
had a bit of a problem when the program wanted me to search the internet for
stgh toopen it with, but saving it on the desktop and simply running it
worked a treat. Thanks so much - I have been without the SEND\ facility for
3 wks till I tried this!

Steve Cochran's fix that Gary V. passed on did the trick for me. Problem
doesn't exist anymore, so didn't need to use the link you gave. I appreciate
the tip, though -- thanks for sharing it.

I need help with this too! I have followed all advice thus far but when I
get to the part where I click on "Clear Outbox", I get a big error window and
it says Unable to Access Database (and then a lot of text/words/numbers
follow.)

Any ideas for me?

Thank you!

That older method was superseded a long time ago by a newer and
better method. It is always best to consult the latest advice first.
Use this Microsoft fix:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090
"Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a
computer that is running Windows Vista"

That page offers two download options. Unless you know for sure
you have 64-bit Vista, use the 32-bit option.
