Previous message in the wrong area:
I down loaded IE 8 @ microsoft..it appeared to cause the following after I
restarted: "one of the files containing the systems registry data had to be
recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful."

So I removed the IE8 using the uninstall method. restarted and the same
message returns.

The "message" does not say what file or give an error code of any type.

XP-pro 32 bit XP-3 is what I have.

Please help, I do not have the disc any more.

Try a disk scan. See this page:

"How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

Also try a malware scan using tested antispyware tools, such as SpyBot or
Microsoft's own Windows Defender.

I think I found why, not sure.

I used Trend Micro hijackthis program checking starting programs this is
what I found:

Listing of startup folders:

Shell folders Startup:
[C:\Documents and Settings\Fred\Start Menu\Programs\Startup]
*No files*

Shell folders AltStartup:
*Folder not found*

User shell folders Startup:
*Folder not found*

User shell folders AltStartup:
*Folder not found*

Shell folders Common Startup:
[C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup]
*No files*

Shell folders Common AltStartup:
*Folder not found*

User shell folders Common Startup:
*Folder not found*

User shell folders Alternate Common Startup:
*Folder not found*

--------------------------------------------------

Checking Windows NT UserInit:

[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
UserInit = C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
*Registry key not found*

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
*Registry value not found*

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
*Registry key not found*

Does this tell you any thing? Is there a way to fix this if this is the
issue?

I too am getting the same message almost every time I reboot.

"One of the files containing the system's Registry data had to be recovered
by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful."

This has been happening on a machine that I just finished doing a clean
install on. I did a clean install of Windows XP ran all updates, installed
all correct and latest drivers. I also installed IE 8 00 and I am suspicious
of that as a possible cause.

MSDN states of this message:
User Action:
"This Windows 2000 Executive STATUS message is for your information. Choose
OK to continue. No other action is needed."
source: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms856856.aspx

However because this happens often, I would like to solve the underlying
problems.

Any help appreciated. In this case I am pretty confident that it is not
malware. The machine is clean and has been scanned.

Thanks!

Well, I can relate my own experience, but I don't know how well it
applies to you. My experience was with a laptop. It turned out that
the hard drive was going bad (wearing thin?) in the area occupied by
the registry file. The disk would write/read just fine, but if you let
the machine sit overnight, the disk would "forget" some of the sectors
occupied by the registry and boot up with the error that you are
getting. In the process of rebooting from this alterate registry, the
main registry was overwritten with this backup copy... which meant that
since it was freshly re-written, it was good to go for another 8 hours
or so (ie overnight) at which time it would "forget" again at the
reboot the next morning. Disk checks would work fine since that area
of the disk was always freshly re-written during the reboot process.

I replaced the hard drive and never had this problem again.

At a very minimum, this is a wake-up call to get your data backed-up
off of your hard drive.

HTH,
John
