Message "Do you want to save the changes to x.doc? when none made

I am running windows xp, micorosoft word 2002. When I go into a document and
immediately exit, I get the question "Do you want to save the changes to
xxx.doc?" when no changes have been made. I found Susan Barnhill's reference
to article 816473, which recommends going into word, tools, autocorrect
options, smart tags, and unchecking the "label text with smart tags" box. I
did this and still have the same problem. Any other ideas?
