Message Alert Sounds

Although I have a .wav file associated with a new message receipt and I have
Outlook set to play a sound on receipt of a mail I only hear a click.

Strangely enough I have also lost my windows startup and close down sounds
(althought both have .wav files associated with them), all other audio
notifications are OK.

Any thoughts?

Are those WAV files still on your machine? I'd double check just to make
sure.

Yes the files are still on my machine and are linked to the tasks in question.

Do they play when you check them out in the Control Panel's Sounds applet?

Yes they play and are linked but I only get a click, log on and off and trash
can are also not functioning, all other sounds are OK.
