"Tomorrow, God willing, is the graceful celebration of the birth of our Lord and Saviour; and thus is declared a peaceful Christmas time to all, by advising devotion and to behave otherwise quietly and peacefully, because he who breaks this peace and violates the peace of Christmas by any illegal or improper behaviour shall under aggravating circumstances be guilty and punished according to what the law and statutes prescribe for each and every offence separately.

Finally, a joyous Christmas feast is wished to all inhabitants of the city."

The tradition of reading the Declaration of Christmas Peace in Turku has continued almost uninterrupted since the 1320s. The declaration has been read on the balcony of the Brinkkala building since 1888.

According to folk memory, the tradition was interrupted during the Russian invasion and occupation of Finland in 1712–1721 – a period also known as the Greater Wrath, possibly between 1809 and 1815, in 1917 when the militia was on strike, and in 1939 because of a fear of air raids.

The Declaration of Christmas Peace is a tradition which launches the Christmas celebrations and in a way marks the official start of Christmas. The exact wording used during the first few centuries of the tradition has been lost over time, but the main contents of the declaration remain the same: the declaration is read out loud to remind people that Christmas peace has begun, to advise people to spend the festive period in harmony, to threaten offenders with harsh punishments, and to wish all a merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas everyone :). Hope you're all going to relax tonight and have a nice big lie in tomorrow morning :D (unless you're aged 12 and under, or have kids, in which case enjoy 5am ;)).

Merry Christmas everybody:cheers:

(Didn't expect that did you? :D )

On me tod today, which suits me fine but come evening time started going a little stir crazy so went for a stroll. Took a few snaps, here's a few, taken less than one hour ago:

This is our local Christmas tree. A spiffing little tree and worthy of awe and admiration. Of course.

And looking across the river to where all the scary people live in the Eastern sector we shall play 'Spot the Christmas Tree'.

One of Santa's many stops, probably:

And now it's time to play 'Spot The Fox' it's definitely in there somewhere. The grounds of St Alfeges Church:

You have no car, no bicycle or other independent mode of transport then today you use Shanks' Pony:

We enjoyed your photos here Sir Flopps. The Christmas tree does indeed look cheery - in fact, even the lights reflected off the river look festive.

The urban fox photo is my favourite though. The church grounds look very peaceful... as one would expect, of course, and Reynard looks very much at-home. He doesn't look at all spooked by your presence.

Ooh, and did you notice the flying object, captured in your first photo? Guessing it to be a helicopter, or aircraft of some kind.

Thanks for sharing your stroll with us :)

Christmas was thought to last 'til St. Knut's Day (13 January — the "under aggravating circumstances" clause is still on), so try and keep out of mischief.

No snow yet but bitterly cold with an icy wind when out this afternoon.
Going to be a heavy frost tonight and looks like it will get colder.
Get the fire on & sit by it for me tonight.
