Merging from a field (help for a teacher)

I am a middle school teacher trying to come up with a word document that I
can use all the time. I want to be able to print a homework slip for my
students that they can take home and get signed each night, but I dont want
to have to type in the date and homework assignment each time. I was hoping
I would use a field to insert the date and assigment from either a data base
or whatever else is easy. I have done this previously with MS Works but using
Word and Access is beyond me.

The basic design im trying to do is this:

Name __(student write in) ________________ Date (field for date)

Todays Assigment is (field for homework assignment)

Parents Signature ____________________

I would like to print 6 to 8 of these per page.

Well, he already said using Word and Access was beyond him, so he wouldn't
have tried Mail Merge.

If you want him to try mail merge, YOU need to set up the two documents
involved and sent them to him with detailed instructions as to what to do
next.

I would follow Doug's advice.

But I also have a question for Mr./Mrs./Mz. GILLESPEY:

What is the PURPOSE of these forms?

Currently, you are permitting the students to fill in their own name. You
are getting them back with a "signature" on them: how do you know that it's
the PARENT's signature? If I think back 45 years to when I was at school, I
can assure you that the only time that signature was ever may *parent's*
signature was when my MOTHER was the teacher (which I regarded as most
unfair...)

But much more important than either of those: what is it that you are asking
the parent to sign FOR? There are no words on your form asking the parent
to do anything, to take responsibility for anything, or to supervise
anything.

So the kid takes the form home, the parent scribbles their signature, you
get the form back and you have the problem of trying to figure out who
signed it.

Everyone is filling in all these forms and doing all this work, but nothing
has actually happened! Sounds a bit like the Government to me :)

Cheers

Have you tried mail merge?
