Merge Word Documents

Would like to know how I can copy one document into another and keep the numbering within each "document" the same as prior to pasting. Currently the pasted information continues with the numbering from the first document

Paste Special => Paste as plain text.

Automatic numbering is a real weak point in Word.

I have the exact same question! I have 12 "chapters" which make up a book, each with their own headers, footers, endnotes, etc... which I need to merge as a single word doc, while still maintaining the individual header, footers, etc..

I am using WORD 2000 (9.0.3821 SR-1

Section breaks should work, with some modifications. Use Insert | File,
which leaves the original file untouched. You may need to unlink the
header/footers by section, can be easily done on the Header/Footer toolbar,
and may need to be done before you insert the file. On the same toolbar,
click on Format Page Number in each section to restart at 1.
