merge cells

I have a hugh spreadsheet and I want to merge 2 cells in one row.
nothing in the next row, then again 2 cells in the next row and so on,,, is
there any way??

The formula below will merge all odd rows

=IF(MOD(ROW(A1),2)>0,A1&B1,"")

and this even ones

=IF(MOD(ROW(A1)+1,2)>0,A1&B1,"")
