Merge cells on protected sheet

I use a sheet where the 3 first rows are locked by "format-cells". Rest of
cells on sheet are un-locked. The whole sheet is protected.
Is there a way to merge some of the un-locked cells below the 3 first
locekd rows ?
The icon for "merge cells" bloks out when sheet-protection is on

I bet Frank was thinking that if you protect the worksheet but allow the user to
format cells, then it would work ok.

But I still couldn't do cell merging with unlocked cells on a protected
worksheet in xl2002.

Maybe you could provide a macro for the user.

It would unprotect the worksheet, merge the cells you want, and then reprotect
the worksheet.

(Personally, I do my best to stay away from merged cells. There are lots of
things that don't work nicely with merged cells. <yeah, sometimes, you gotta
merge cells!>
