I am able to add the Delete Slide button to a PowerPoint toolbar, but when I
try to add an icon it always disappears after I close the customize box (even
if I select show Icon and Text). The Delete slide command is the only one I
have tried that does that? I originally thought that it was because it had no
icon associated with it, but other commands without associated icons will
allow me to add them. Nothing seems to be able to make it stick, even though
it worked in previous versions of PowerPoint?

Try going to Tools|Customize|Options and put a check in the box for "show
toolbars on two rows."

I just added a "delete slide" icon here with no difficulty, so I suspect
that your Delete button is just hiding with the other "not yet used" icons
on the particular toolbar.

Dr. Tom,
If it is any comfort to you I experience the same problem here. And I have
my toolbars on separate rows, that's the first thing I always change when I
install Office.
The icon just disappears the moment you hit close and only with the delete
slide command.
Very strange indeed.

Echo,
Me too, exactly what you use.

Oh, but wait. I think I totally misunderstood Dr. Tom's question.

I can't add an icon to "delete slide," either. But the "delete slide" button
(the text) doesn't disappear from the toolbar or anything like that -- it
just leaves a blank spot where the icon should go.

My apologies for muddying the waters!

Echo,
That's exactly it, text visible but no icon.

Well it seems that at least I am not crazy (or as far as it concerns
PowerPoint). Whatever the reason it seems to be operative ONLY for Delete
Slide because I can add icons for other commands without associated icons,
and can change icons on those that do have them. However, I admit I have not
tried ALL of the other "no associated icon" buttons.

OK, so other than simply accepting that it cannot do it (and if I did that I
never would have posted a question I guess), where do I go from here?

I think this one may fall into the "acceptance" side.

Dr. Tom,

Did you ever resolve the issue with adding an image to the "delete slide"
button in PowerPoint? I've got the same problem and can't find a solution,
or confirmation that it's unfixable, anywhere.

Thanks for your help.
